The "Minority Tax" and Wellness

With only 2% of Academic Physicians being Black men, I share my story in medicine with themes on imposter syndrome, systemic racism, and the power of mentorship. I'll also be discussing some of the data available on the "minority tax" extra burden people of color face in health care and some solutions. Lastly, I'll focus on some challenges regarding physician wellbeing that have an added layer of complexity to them when a person identifies as a minority.

Objectives

  • Be able to identify some of the challenges minority physicians and trainees should be aware of in being part of predominately white institutions
  • Be able to define some terms such as “minority tax”, intersectionality, and microaggression
  • Leave with tools and potential next steps to better navigate and mitigate the minority tax and its impact on wellness
